General Sort Of Status Report

on February 27, 2015 in MU Blog

Hey, folks. There have been some health issues in our household in the past couple weeks, hence the slightly slower updates, less frequent moderation-queue-clearing, and lack of communication. If this happens again, I’ll try to send up a flag at the beginning rather than the end, but when it started it was just like… eh, tomorrow will be better. And then after a few tomorrows passed, I just didn’t have the wherewithal to communicate.

I’ve been so exhausted that it’s all I can do to get two updates a week written and posted. Things are looking up in my department, though our moderator moofable is still feeling pretty yucky. Thanks for bearing with us!

As a more general comment on comments: every once in a while someone takes it personally or is confused when their comment gets held, especially when moderation is slow and it seems like newer comments are showing up. Just so it’s clear: I don’t have anything to do with comment moderation because it’s actually kind of demanding to read comments on one’s own work, in the long run.

But if you see this happening, you can almost always be sure that what’s happening is that the newer comments weren’t held to begin with, not that they were released faster or that they were let through while yours was deleted. Holding comments for moderation is 99% to make sure they aren’t spam rather than selective content control, so the only comments that are always held for clearing are ones by someone the software deems to be a new commenter and ones that contain multiple links.

Again: the moderator is sick, so please cut him some slack and don’t jump to the worst conclusion or feel like you’re being picked on if your comment doesn’t seem to go through.

Yah, the filtering system isn’t all that smart about it. Even internal links get held for moderation. It’s unfortunate, but at least we don’t have people telling us about how they are “making $1000 a week from home with this simple trick” – that’s even more annoying than being held for moderation.

Are the permissions different for site members? I don’t think I have seen a hold since that got added, but I don’t remember if I have even posted links.

Hmm, this is the first cahpter, and this is the last one. Here is my above comment, and this one is a search for the term “kitten” (really, only ten chapters?). And for good measure why not Patreon too?

      EDIT: Still got held.

Yeah, for some reason the software decided to just put that in the trash? Ah well. At least now I know I need to look at that too.

I deleted it, since I figured it wasn’t really useful.

Though why it wouldn’t say something like “deleted by author” or some such is certainly odd. . .

            Ahh, that makes sense.

And this is why UX is just as important for administrators as it is for users. Developers are always forgetting that.

Upon investigation, looks like a no. Links still trigger the moderation hold.

You’ve been consistent, and that’s what matters the most (certainly more than quantity). I appreciate it.

Get better. Take care of you. 🙂

Extremely consistent, almost every chapter in the past few weeks not only went up on the right day but at the same time of day. It was predictable to the point I was almost worried it was automated and something terrible had happened.

I posted with this username a couple posts ago. I’m not castigating the system or assigning blame, I’m just mucking around.

As part of spam prevention, comments have to go through moderation unless they are a known user. Sometimes that moderation takes a while.
