Placeholder: See, this is why it’s a big deal that I’m moving in eight weeks.

on August 12, 2013 in MU Blog

Due to the killer combination of it being unusually hot upstairs (this is likely to be the hottest day of the week) and unusually crowded downstairs (one of my housemates returned from a trip much later than expected due to car troubles, and her travelmates have been crashed out in the living room for most of the day), I don’t have a usable work space today.

The rhythm of the house and other people’s schedules is such that this sort of thing is more likely to happen on Monday, which is why I’ve been doing bonus stories on Monday. They’re usually lower stress and take less time and space to get done. But today’s just a confluence of… stuff.

The forecast for tomorrow (both meteorological and ergonomical) looks muuuuuuuuuch better, so the bonus story will come up tomorrow with no implications for disrupting the rest of the week’s schedule.

And come October, I’ll have a nice office in an air conditioned room on the second floor of a house. Not the attic, where solar radiation goes to spend its summer vacation. Not the ground floor, where people will be coming and going or doing their own things… which happens. It’s a common living area. It was better when I first moved in because there was a back room that I could use as an office, but now there are more people living in the house and that’s a bedroom.

Anyway, that’s a tangent. The point is that I am–not by choice–out of office today, but we’ll still have three updates this week. Thank you for your patience and your support. And you know what? This is going to get better very soon, because of your help. Thank you for that, too!

Have you ever thought about having a drive to get a simple AC unit? I’m sure we could come up with $200 among the group of us!

    • Funny story… I have a window AC unit. It took me until my second summer here to figure out how to make it work efficiently enough (dividing the attic in two with curtains), but last summer… which was way hotter than this one… I only had a few trouble days.

The problem is that the windows were all replaced this past winter with energy-saving models, and the attic window is considerable smaller (I think that’s part of the energy efficiency). Basically, its frame fits inside where the frame of the previous window was. It’s like the kind of window a bathroom has for ventilation.

I’ve looked online for a model that will fit the opening, but there doesn’t seem to be one. And I don’t really live in a place that’s dry enough for an evaporative cooler to make enough of a difference.

They sell non-window AC units…sit on the floor, have a tube going out and a tube going in. They can fit any window with a little fiddling!
