I’ve mentioned this a couple of times, including a blog post last night, but I’m currently serving as nursemaid to my roommate. No, for those who are concerned, she’s not in any peril health-wise. She’s recovering from a necessary surgery on what doctors call the “wristular area” of her dominant hand, as well as unrelated injuries to her back and leg. Luckily (for a certain value of “luck”), the convalescence period for her non-work-related injuries matches up pretty well with that of her surgery.
She doesn’t require a lot of care, which is a good thing as I’m not actually a nurse, but there are a lot of things she’s not able to manage on her own right now. I can hammer out a ~3000 word story in about two hours if I don’t have any interruptions. If it were simply a matter of just pushing the buttons on the keyboard, I could weather any number of interruptions in a day and still get everything done. But the physical act of typing is the least part of what I do, and it takes a while to get the “momentum” back.
Anyway, although she’ll still have some restrictions, she should be back to work on Monday, which means my work day will be my own again. So, next week should tentatively be back to normal.
There’s going to be a person… because there’s always a person… who’s going to point out that I’m going to cost myself readers, donations, ad money, etc. if I don’t “get my priorities straight”, and as always I’m going to address that up front: shit happens. This is not fun and it’s not convenient, but I couldn’t do what I do without her support and encouragement and her share of the rent and utilities. Leaving aside any questions of fondness and standing obligations, losing half of my readership overnight would not have as much impact on my ability to keep writing as losing her would.
As always, I’ll remind the people who have donated that even if the target isn’t met, their donations will still count towards next week. I appreciate every dime that I get.
(Nickels can take a flying leap, though. Nickels are assholes.)
Anyway, no updates tonight, but there will be updates to both Tales of MU and MOAR MU tomorrow. How do I know? Because I’m half done with both of them already. In order to try to get around the “momentum problem”, I’ve been switching off when I’m having trouble getting back into one. It’s been somewhat helpful, and I’m going to keep it up next week, because there will always be interruptions of one sort or another.
Happy Sunday! Thanks to everybody who donated to reach the new target, and everybody who’s been spreading the word to bring in new readers. While I depend on the donation money to pay my bills, the number one most important thing for the long-term survival of MU is the continued growth of the audience. Please tell your friends if you think they’d be interested, and share the links with appropriate groups/websites.
If you think you know people who might be interested but don’t know how to explain what MU’s all about or how to get them in the door, try giving them a link to the first chapter. You can even post it in your blog or Livejournal as the MU Meme.
