Attention, Two-Fans!
Boy, am I a ditz… no, that’s not the announcement. The other day I put a link in my comments to a contest description on the forum, not remembering that (as somebody just pointed out to me) I made the forum registered-members-only. I didn’t mean to exclude any interested readers from participating by making forum registration a requirement to enter.
So, here’s the gist: come up with a design based no Two’s runes that I can put on t-shirts and the like. Winner gets a free product bearing the design. Click the more link for the details (copied from the forum post.)
Hey, folks! I’m looking for artwork to put on Two-themed t-shirts and the like. Specifically, I’m looking for representations of her runes, described as The Tree of Life, the Wizard’s Mark/Forked Staff, and the Circle of Will, Negated… depicted below by Valkyrie Phoenix:
as adapted from the craptacular sketch by me:
You can see why I need help with this, right?
Anyway, take the sketch as a rough guideline…Valkyrie Phoenix’s tree is actually closer to what I had in mind than my sketch showed, and there’s still room for interpretation and artistic flourishes, depending on what speaks to you as “runey”. The real key is that you have to be able to look at it and get “T W O”, even if you have to turn your head and squint.
Entry specfications:
1. Entries should be submitted as a .jpg file, attached to an email mailed to alexandra (squiggle thingy) alexandraerin (round thingy) com with “TWO CONTEST” (all caps, just like that) in the subject line… and nothing else in the subject line.
2. Because these are going to be printed on t-shirts and the like, they should be drawn large… filling most of a 1,000 pixel by 1,000 pixel space, for instance.
3. You can put scrolly dingbats or other things around the symbols if you wish, or put in stylized (or realistic!) representation of eyes, hair, etc. framing the runes, though the object of this exercise is the runes themselves… please don’t make the background flesh-colored. In fact, don’t make it any colored. Just plain white.
(Note that I’m not saying ones which “interesting up” the space around the runes will be given credit over ones which don’t. The winning entry or entries will be ones that look good and work for me. I’m just pointing out ways in which you can choose to express yourself a little, within this visual equivalent of a haiku.)
4. Again, because this is intended to be put on a t-shirt, please “clean up” any hand-drawn-and-scanned artwork… make the lines dark and solid and thick, make sure the background has no smudges or other artifacts in it. A picture that I can’t use, can’t win, no matter how kick-awesome it is.
Now, terms and conditions:
1. By submitting your artwork, you give me ownership of it… i.e., the exclusive permission to use it without further compensation than is set down herein. (You may include it in portfolios or on your personal webspace for non-commercial bragging purposes, but no selling knock-off Two merch.)
2. I may choose as many or as few winners (as few as zero) as I see fit.
3. If your artwork is chosen for merchandise you may choose any one item (t-shirt or other) on which your artwork appears, by way of compensation. You will also receive credit, under your real name or pseudonym, on the webpage for the online store in which the merchandise appears. If your original artwork is ever incorporated into the cover design or other artwork for a book, you will receive an acknowledgement within said book.
4. Whether your artwork is chosen or not, you agree not to assert rights of ownership on the general design. (In other words, you acknowledge that you’re drawing in order to fit a specific description, and that other people following that same description are likely to come up with similar things to what you draw, and that’s okay.)
I’m going to accept submissions at least until October 31st, but I reserve the right to hold it open longer based on interest.
I create character. I design runes. You draw runes. I still own design. I still own character. You no use runes. If I put runes on t-shirt, you get free one. Reserve right make t-shirts with many designs or no designs. I agree to no steal your DNA and brainwaves at night to make army of artist clones. Ice cream is good.
Any questions?
There were some questions on the forum about use of color on the runes, etc… the short answer to all of these is to be creative. I’m not looking for somebody to read my mind and come up with what I think the runes should look like, and neither am I looking for somebody to follow a detailed set of precise specifications (so please, don’t bother pumping me for them). I’m just not a very visual thinker, for one, and for two, this is an art contest.
Also, the 1,000 pixel by 1,000 pixel is just an example, a shorthand for “really kind of big”, for people who are opening MS Paint and giving it a shot. If you’ve got some kind of actual, you know, software on your computer and you want to know how many dpi, etc., I’m going for, see above in re: precise specifications. Make it big, it’s going on a t-shirt. If you’re the sort of person who just can’t proceed without parameters (which would be oddly appropriate, given the subject matter), you can always download a template off Cafepress.
